Elizabeth Piedmont-Marton takes to the road to explore the way we produce, procure, prepare and eat food as it relates to our culture. The lecture will be held at the Pearl Farmer's Market, just north of downtown San Antonio.

Lunch will be served by Chef Johnny Hernandez of True Flavors' Mesalegre. Chef Hernandez will prepare lunch exclusively for guests of this event from produce found in the Pearl Farmer's Market. Dr. Piedmont Marton's lecture will follow. Tickets to the event are $15 per guest. Family and friends are welcome! Look for The San Antonio Association banner when you arrive.

Summary of Lecture: Food is an old subject. But the academic study of the way people produce, procure, prepare, and eat food as a path to understanding culture is relatively new. This seminar will stimlulate itself at the multi-disciplinary interchange that characterizes this new field of inquiry and will introduce participants to the ways in which practices of everyday life, as well as historical and literary texts, may be open to intellectual inquiry about food and eating. Among the questions we'll pursue are, what was the impact of West African slaves in the development of American food, what was the "home economics movement" and how did it effect gender roles, why is American food still considered inferior as a world cuisine, and how are food and politics intertwined.
