Homecoming and Reunion Weekend Breaks All-Time
Attendance Record
"What a
wonderful time and such memories!," remarked one alumna. Magnificent
weather and record-breaking attendance contributed to a grand
celebration of the 100th anniversary of Southwestern's first
Homecoming. Total attendance exceeded 1450 alumni and guests breaking
the all-time best attendance record for the fourth year in a row.
Guests who attended were invited to complete the post-Homecoming survey. Feedback from that survey will be used to help plan next
year's Homecoming. Results that have been received to date indicate
that the overwhelming favorite events were (in no particular order):
- Class Reunions
- Homecoming Picnic
- The Bob Schneider Band Outdoor Concert
- Chapel Service
- Celebrating 40 Years of African-American Achievement
- Alumni Hospitality House
- Panoramic Photo
- SING!
If you came to Homecoming and would like to submit your feedback,
please do so by November 30.
View photos from Homecoming and Reunion Weekend. If you took photos at
Homecoming, send your best (or favorite) photos to
alumni@southwestern.edu for
publication on our Web site or in Southwestern,
the University magazine, (with photographer credits to you, of course).

The Office of Alumni Relations
would like to thank Homecoming and Reunion Chair Margaret Blair
Fitzgerald ’01 and Student Homecoming Chair, Alex Burbey '11 for
their leadership, the class reunion committees for their
planning and efforts to inspire classmates to attend, the Alumni
Council members for their constant support and encouragement, and the
numerous volunteers who helped throughout the weekend. Homecoming and
Reunion Weekend is successful each year because of you!
ALUMNI NEWS
Southwestern's First
African-American Graduate Receives Southwestern University Medal
Ernest Clark '69, the first African-American to graduate from
Southwestern University, has been awarded one of the University’s
highest honors – the Southwestern University Medal. The medals are
given by the Board of Trustees for contributions to the University,
either through service or philanthropy. Clark enrolled at Southwestern
in the fall of 1965 after having been a participant in the Negro Fine
Arts School, an after-school music program for middle and high school
students developed by Southwestern in partnership with the First
Methodist Church of Georgetown. Clark participated in the program in
1959 and from 1962-1966. The medal was presented Nov. 6 during a gala
event celebrating 40 years of African-American alumni achievement.
Clark played an original composition during the ceremony and led the
audience in the singing of Southwestern’s Alma Mater. “Ernest Clark was
the one with whom 40 years of African-American achievement at
Southwestern started,” said President Jake B. Schrum, who graduated
from Southwestern the year before Clark did. “His achievement paved the
way for the achievement of others.” In presenting the medal to Clark,
Schrum praised him for his “courage in a turbulent time, for facing
what no others had faced, and for putting Southwestern on a
transformative path.” Read more.
Celebration Features Reflections of African-American Alumni
As part of the Homecoming and Reunion Weekend event "Celebrating 40
Years of African-American Alumni Achievement," a production featuring
film, music, photography and live monologues paid tribute to
Southwestern's African-American alumni. Sammie Robinson '73, Janine
Pope Mays '83, Angelyque Campbell '92, and LaToya
Alexander '08 moved the audience with their personal stories of
challenges and triumphs. Interwoven with the monologues were recorded
interviews produced by Yesenia Garcia '03 of Echo Earth Media,
on the experiences of African-American students at Southwestern over
the last four decades. Click here to watch
interviews with Ernest Clark '69, Jake B. Schrum '68, Larry
Haynes '72, Cheryl Hughes Haynes '73, Rick Eason
'73, Earl L. Moseley Jr. '84, Tracie Shelton
Hervey '91, Liz
Guillory Medina '97, Daria Russell '02, Ben Woods
'06, and John Lind. Audience members rose to their feet
when the event culminated in
President Jake B. Schrum '68 presenting the Southwestern
Medal
to
Southwestern's first African-American graduate Ernest Clark
'69.
Volunteer Leadership Weekend
Once a year, nearly 100 alumni, parent and staff volunteers gather on
campus to hear updates on the University and The Association of
Southwestern University Alumni, receive training specific for their
roles, meet, plan and share ideas with one another. The 2010 Volunteer
Leadership Weekend is scheduled for January 29-30. Volunteers who are
invited to participate are Alumni Assembly Delegates, Alumni Council
members, Annual Giving Board members, A.R.E.A. (Admission Recruiting
Efforts by Alumni) volunteers, Class Agents, Local Association
officers, Alumni Connection Group representatives and the 2010 Reunion
Planning Committee members. The Alumni
Assembly will hold its annual meeting, hear a report from the Alumni
Council of the work of The Association of Southwestern University
Alumni, elect new Alumni Council members and hear about the
University's strategic plan. Volunteers and Alumni Assembly Delegates
will receive schedules and registration information in December. If you
are not currently a volunteer, but would be interested in attending
Volunteer Leadership Weekend, contact the Office of Alumni and Parent
Relations.

Alumni Propose University Columbarium
Motivated by the sentiment that Southwestern played a sacred role in
their lives, a committee of alumni have proposed building a columbarium
next to the Lois Perkins Chapel on Southwestern's campus. A columbarium
is a structure with niches that serve as a burial vault for the
containment of urns holding cremated remains. Many churches have built
columbaria on their grounds. Southwestern's architectural firm drafted
some conceptual drawings so that the committee could share the idea of
a columbarium with alumni and measure interest. Should they determine
that there is enough interest to garner the necessary early
commitments, they will ask the Board of Trustees to consider the
columbarium as one of Southwestern's building projects. Niches in the
columbarium would cost $5,000, which would include the cost of
construction, maintenance for perpetuity and a scholarship contribution
to the University Endowment. In order to proceed, 125 initial
commitments of interest are needed. Visit http://.sualumni.net/columbarium
for more information and to register your interest.

CAMPUS HIGHLIGHTS
New Partnership Enables Students to Gain Real-Life
Research Experience
At the Ride On Center for Kids in Georgetown, families and staff
members say “miracles happen every day” when children and adults with
disabilities such as autism spectrum disorder are given the opportunity
to ride horses. Unfortunately, the center has no quantitative research
to back up this claim. And they are not alone. “There are a lot of
equine-assisted programs in the country, but peer-reviewed, published
research is almost non-existent,” says Jacquie Muir-Broaddus, a
professor of psychology at Southwestern. That may change soon, thanks
to a new partnership between R.O.C.K. and Southwestern. This fall,
Southwestern students are working on two different research projects
for R.O.C.K. Read more.
Southwestern Team
Brings Home Prize in Ethics Competition
For the second year in a row, a team of students from
Southwestern won its division and placed second overall in the annual
Business
Ethics Match hosted by the Texas Independent College Foundation (TICF).
This year’s Southwestern team consisted
of Ross Harrison,
Zach Joplin, Christopher McMartin and Ashley Richards. The team won its
division, but lost in the final round to Southwestern Assemblies of God
University in Waxahachie in a match that had to be decided by a
tiebreaker. Read more.
Pirate Athletics:
Pirate Volleyball Success and More
After a banner season, the volleyball team fell to Trinity Saturday,
Nov. 14, in
their first ever all-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC)
NCAA DIII South Regional Final. The loss ended the historic season for
the Pirates that included a 33-game winning streak (the longest in
Southwestern history), and a SCAC conference title with a perfect 15-0
record. We applaud our Pirate volleyball team for an impressive season!
The men's and women's basketball teams opened their seasons Sunday,
Nov. 15 at the University of Dallas. The men won a tight game,
48-46 while the women dropped their opening contest 72-60. The swimming
teams have started out strong. They participated at the Hendrix Relays
in their opening weekend and finished very well against difficult
competition. The cross country teams have closed out their seasons with
runs at the SCAC Championships and South/Southeast Regional
Competition. The men's team finished in 10th place in the Regional
while the women finished in 21st place. Both the men’s and women’s
soccer teams closed their seasons with home matches
during Homecoming and Reunion Weekend. Both teams swept the final
weekend of action as the men finished 9-9 on the year while the women
ended 10-8-1 overall. For photos, scores and the latest
